Qatar Demands Iran Compensate for Damages from Attacks on Its Territory

Qatar has sent two letters to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the Security Council regarding Iranian attacks on its territory, demanding that Tehran assume legal responsibility for the damages and compensate for the resulting losses.

In these letters, Qatar's permanent representative to the United Nations, Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, stated that Iran targeted the Qatari tanker "Al-Rukayyat" while it was passing near the Strait of Hormuz on July 7, 2026, in addition to missile attacks on July 12 and July 17, 2026.

The letters noted that Qatari armed forces intercepted several ballistic missile attacks, while the Ministry of Interior reported three injuries, including a child, caused by shrapnel from the interception operations.

Doha affirmed that the Iranian attacks represent a "serious and unacceptable escalation," describing them as violations of international law principles and the Geneva Conventions. The attacks also breach Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026, which condemned Iranian attacks on Qatar and regional countries and called for their cessation.

Qatar held Iran legally accountable for the damages caused by these attacks and demanded compensation for the losses incurred. It also emphasized its right to respond under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter to ensure the right to self-defense.

Doha stressed its commitment to taking necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and the safety of citizens and residents on its soil amid rising regional tensions.

Separately, the Qatari news agency reported that the Iraqi Prime Minister arrived in Doha.
