Renewed Attacks Escalate Tensions in Strait of Hormuz Between Washington and Tehran

The British Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. This incident follows a series of attacks exchanged between the United States and Iran, representing the most severe escalation since the signing of their interim agreement.

Both countries have accused each other of violating the agreement reached about two weeks ago, which aimed to end a conflict ongoing for four months. Washington stated that it targeted Iranian sites overnight, while Iran announced on Saturday that it retaliated by striking locations linked to US forces.

The tanker was targeted in the strait on Saturday after a cargo ship was attacked on Thursday, intensifying the situation. This comes amid renewed Iranian efforts to assert control over the crucial maritime route for global energy shipments, which had reopened in the past two weeks following months of disruption.

The British authority indicated that the tanker sustained damage to its control room, but all crew members remain safe.

The Maritime Information Center, operated by a coalition of naval forces protecting navigation, announced it had raised the security threat level due to recent events.

Iran has not issued a direct statement regarding reports of specific attacks on ships. However, Iranian state television reported that the Revolutionary Guard fired "warning shots" at unspecified vessels attempting to pass through routes not approved by Iran. It added that this has led other ships to now request Iranian permits before attempting to transit the strait.

Iran accused the United States of breaching the interim agreement, particularly by failing to maintain the promised ceasefire in Lebanon.

On Saturday, Ibrahim Azizi, head of the National Security Committee in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, declared that Iran would respond firmly to any violations of its navigation instructions concerning the strait.

US Vice President J.D. Vance affirmed that Americans have complied with the ceasefire agreement, also known as the memorandum of understanding, and stated that Iran would be held responsible for any renewed conflict resulting from its actions.

Vance posted on the X platform: "Iran signed the ceasefire agreement. We have adhered to it. If they have objections about how the memorandum of understanding is implemented, they can call us. But violence will be met with violence."
