US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that the possibility of achieving peace between Israel and Lebanon exists, but he stressed that Hezbollah constitutes the main obstacle in this path.
During a press briefing at the White House, Rubio told reporters: "In general, I believe that reaching a peace agreement between Lebanon and Israel is achievable in the near future, and it should happen." He added that "the problem between Israel and Lebanon is not Israel or Lebanon, but Hezbollah," affirming that everyone wants to see the Lebanese government capable of pursuing the party, according to what was reported by Reuters.
In a related context, CNN reported that Israel is considering escalating its strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, in the event of a collapse of the ceasefire with Iran.
Sources also revealed that the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon in the United States held two meetings in Washington in recent weeks, with the aim of opening direct negotiations between the two countries, which are officially considered in a state of war since 1948.
The US Embassy in Beirut called on Thursday for a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This call came two weeks after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hezbollah.
