Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov announced on Friday that the elimination of a group of Ukrainian forces consisting of two thousand military personnel, who were besieged in the northeast of Kharkiv province, has been completed.

The announcement came in a report presented by Gerasimov to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting held by Putin at an auxiliary command center of the Unified Group of Forces.

Gerasimov said: "The enemy group surrounded in the northeastern part of Kharkiv province has been completely eliminated."

According to the Chief of General Staff, the operation resulted in control over 28 towns.

He added that Russian forces thwarted Ukrainian attempts to expel them from the city of Kupyansk, and that since September 1, they have controlled more than 1,800 square kilometers and 92 towns.

Gerasimov noted that the "North" group of forces continues to expand the security belt along the border in the border areas of Sumy and Kharkiv provinces, and that assault units are advancing in the general direction toward the city of Sumy.
