Russian Forces Strike Fuel Storage Facilities in Odesa and Chornomorsk Ports

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that its forces carried out overnight strikes against infrastructure in Ukraine’s Black Sea region, according to Reuters.

Targeted fuel storage sites

The ministry stated the attacks focused on fuel storage facilities it described as “used for the benefit of” the Ukrainian armed forces. These included installations at the ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk, as well as sites in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi and Novyi Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi areas near Odesa.

No details were provided by the ministry regarding the scale of damage or casualties resulting from the strikes. Independent verification of the Russian account has not been possible.

Strategic role of Odesa-region ports

The ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk hold strategic significance in the Russia-Ukraine war. They are among Ukraine’s principal Black Sea maritime gateways and serve key functions in exporting grain, goods, and raw materials, as well as receiving shipments of military and humanitarian supplies.

Infrastructure at ports in the Odesa region has been repeatedly struck by Russian forces since the start of the war. Moscow’s campaign includes sustained efforts to degrade Ukraine’s logistical and economic infrastructure and disrupt maritime shipping across the Black Sea.
