Russian forces launched a sustained assault on the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv using ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles during the night into Wednesday morning. Initial reports indicated that at least three individuals were killed, while several others suffered injuries as emergency teams continued rescue operations amidst widespread destruction.

Casualties and infrastructure damage

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, stated on Wednesday that the air raids resulted in one fatality and six injuries. He further confirmed that energy facilities within the capital were targeted by the incoming projectiles. According to Reuters, the barrage involving ballistic missiles persisted through the early hours of the day.

Multiple explosions were audible across the city as air defense systems engaged hostile targets throughout the night. Klitschko reported that a high-rise residential building was directly hit by a missile strike. Flames engulfed apartments from the ground floor up to the eighth level, prompting urgent efforts to evacuate residents trapped on higher floors.

Official statements and context

A series of blasts shook the capital during the previous night without any prior warning or alert being issued. Dmytro Lytvyn, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noted that there had been no advance notice regarding the ballistic missile attack.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces executed a large-scale operation during the night using precision ground weapons and long-range attack drones. The ministry claimed these strikes targeted communication and energy infrastructure in Kyiv, as well as the Kyiv and Kharkiv regions, according to Sputnik.

In a separate statement, the ministry detailed that drone attacks focused on production buildings at the "KSM Pro Tech" plant near Kyiv and a substation located close to the town of Vyshhorod. Additionally, units from the Varyag brigade reportedly targeted the ST-68 radar station, a logistics center building, and a locomotive operating on railway lines.
