Seoul urges North Korea to open talks to prevent military clashes
South Korea's defense ministry calls for dialogue with Pyongyang to ease border tensions and avoid unintended conflicts.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense issued a call on Thursday for North Korea to engage in discussions regarding measures that would alleviate tension along the border. The ministry stated its objective is to prevent any potential military confrontations that might occur "unintentionally."
Pyongyang cuts direct communication lines
This diplomatic outreach comes after North Korea severed the direct military hotline with Seoul. Pyongyang declared it would no longer pursue dialogue or reunification with what it characterized as an "enemy" state.
Kim Yo-jong threatens new loudspeaker deployments
Earlier on Thursday, Kim Yo-jong, sister of the North Korean leader, announced that her country would place loudspeakers directed at South Korea along the entire border on alert status within days. She stated that new countermeasures had been prepared and warned Seoul against continuing what Pyongyang considers interference, describing the resulting situation as "more hideous and tragic."
According to Reuters, these threats to redeploy propaganda loudspeakers threaten to undermine significant progress made by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in easing inter-Korean tensions. The rhetoric pushes border friction along the heavily fortified demarcation line to its highest level since Lee took office.
Response to alleged mine planting accusations
In a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, Kim said she was responding to a special advisor to President Lee on defense policy. This advisor had accused North Korea of planting mines that injured two South Korean soldiers and demanded that Pyongyang refrain from escalation.
"Our new countermeasures will enter a state of readiness to operate along the southern border line, and loudspeakers directed against the Republic of Korea will be ready within days," Kim said. She added that North Korea would continue fortifying its southern border.
On Wednesday evening, following a visit to fortification sites accompanied by senior military officials, Kim indicated that North Korea would activate the anti-South Korean loudspeakers across the border by the end of October.
