Trump and Carney Discuss Draft Trade Deal Including Keystone
US President Donald Trump stated his administration has a "vision" for a new trade agreement with Canada, while Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed they had a good conversation about the future of bilateral trade.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that his administration has a "vision" for a new trade agreement with Canada, at a time when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the two leaders had a good conversation regarding the future of trade between the two countries, which are engaged in a trade dispute.
Trump told reporters in Dubuque, Iowa, "I spoke with him again yesterday, and we have a vision for an agreement that will be great for our farmers, great for our country, and we'll be fine regarding that."
Carney had earlier written on social media on Sunday that their conversation "builds on recent constructive discussions regarding the outlines of a mutually beneficial trade agreement," which would create jobs, improve affordability, and fully respect Canada's languages, culture, and sovereignty. Carney wrote on X, "Our teams will now work over the coming weeks to achieve this outcome."
Trump said the scope of the agreement would include the "Keystone XL" pipeline, a project canceled by former President Joe Biden in 2021. Trump said on Sunday, "They will build the Keystone pipeline. And they will pay for it... and we will give them the path, and it has largely been determined."
Carney's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Trump's statements. Canada and the United States imposed billions of dollars in tariffs on each other in recent months. Imposing tariffs on Canada became an issue in some northern US border states ahead of Tuesday's US midterm elections.
Trump said last week that a trade deal with Canada would come soon, but Canada had previously reported limited progress in trade talks, despite efforts to ease tariffs on steel and automobiles.
