Former U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation on Thursday imposing tariffs of up to 100% on imported drones and drone components — a sector dominated by China.
The White House issued a statement justifying the move as necessary to protect U.S. national security, according to a report by Agence France-Presse.
Smaller drones are subject to a 25% tariff rate. The new duties are scheduled to take effect on September 3.
The White House statement said the tariffs aim to “encourage increased domestic production” of drones and related components while reducing reliance on foreign supply chains.
According to multiple studies, Chinese company DJI — founded in 2006 — has captured more than two-thirds of the global drone market in recent years.
Last week, China announced export restrictions on drones bound for the United States and placed six U.S. companies on a blacklist. That action was framed as a response to U.S. trade sanctions imposed over concerns regarding forced labor and national security.
The drone tariff announcement followed closely after the United States imposed new tariffs on China and 59 other countries.
