President Donald Trump warned that the United States faces imminent bankruptcy if the Democratic Party wins the upcoming congressional elections, reiterating his promise of $5,000 payments to citizens under Republican control.
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States would face imminent bankruptcy if the Democratic Party won the next congressional elections.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump reiterated his pledge to give every adult American citizen $5,000 "if the Republicans" win the elections for both chambers of Congress.
Trump added: "The Democrats won't be able to do that because they don't impose tariffs, which means the country will go bankrupt."
Since the start of his second term, Trump has consistently advocated using tariffs as a primary tool to strengthen the federal budget and reduce the massive public debt, which has already surpassed the $40 trillion mark.
The elections in which Americans will determine the new composition of the House of Representatives and the fate of 35 Senate seats are scheduled for November 3. Republicans currently hold a slim majority in both chambers of Congress.
The US president repeatedly reaffirmed his pledge to provide a $5,000 check to every American if Republicans retain control of Congress.
