US President Donald Trump said today, Thursday, that his special envoy Steve Witkoff is now working to reach an agreement with Iran, while affirming at the same time that "the war will end very soon and Iran has become a failed state," as he put it.

Trump added that "the Iranians are ready to offer us anything to stop what is happening, although reaching a deal with them is not the option I truly want," completing: "Iran will never get a nuclear weapon and the Iranians know that well."

He continued in remarks to reporters: "We will leave Iran soon and you will see oil prices drop extremely sharply, and with that other prices will fall."

He added saying: "Over the past three days we have moved more quantities of oil through the Strait of Hormuz than at any time in the history of the strait."

NBC News had previously quoted a US official as saying that Washington and Tehran discussed the nuclear program this month in New York during indirect negotiations.

The US official reported that the administration is seeking to reach an agreement with Iran that addresses core issues including the nuclear program.

At the same time, US officials reported that the national security team discussed Washington's strategy towards Iran and the Houthi militia.

The officials indicated that Trump discussed with the national security team the option of launching strikes on Iran before the midterm elections.
