The U.S. Department of the Treasury issued one-dollar coins bearing the image of Donald Trump, as part of a campaign led by the president to leave his mark on national institutions, according to AFP.

The coins were minted in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

A roll containing 25 one-dollar coins was sold for $61, a 144% increase over their face value, while a case with 100 coins was offered for $154.50.

When the Treasury Department announced the plan, it was unclear whether the coins would have legal tender status or be purely commemorative; however, the U.S. Mint clarified that the coins would be in circulation.

Issuing a coin featuring Trump’s image and having legal tender status violates a federal law that prohibits any living U.S. president from appearing on American currency.

During his second term, Trump repeatedly challenged norms and legal objections in efforts to reshape American institutions, naming a center after himself at Kennedy Center, demolishing the East Wing of the White House to make way for a new ballroom, and taking other similar actions.

The new coin bears Trump’s image on one side, along with the words "Liberty" and "In God We Trust," and includes the dates 1776–2026 to mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

The reverse side features a version of the U.S. presidential seal, showing an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a shield bearing the number 250 at its center.
