UK Charity Under Terror Probe Over Alleged Hamas Ties

British counter-terrorism police and the UK Charity Commission have launched a joint investigation into a London-based Islamic humanitarian organisation known as Al-Khair Foundation, following allegations of ties to Hamas.

Arrest of Turkish national in London

Forty-five-year-old Muhammad Yusuf Hassan was arrested last week in London after being extradited from Istanbul, Turkey. US authorities accused him of conspiring to funnel money and supplies to Hamas through his leadership role in what prosecutors described as a global front humanitarian organisation.

Hassan remains in custody pending extradition proceedings and is expected to be transferred to New York to face charges filed by US authorities, according to PA Media.

Scope of the UK regulatory probe

The Charity Commission has opened a formal inquiry into Al-Khair Foundation, a UK-registered charity that states its mission is to deliver emergency relief and developmental support worldwide.

London’s Counter-Terrorism Command confirmed it is also investigating the foundation and executed search warrants at two addresses in Croydon. No arrests have been made in connection with that investigation.

Police stated they are coordinating closely with the Charity Commission and were aware of Hassan’s detention by US authorities prior to initiating their own inquiry.

Focus of the regulatory review

The Charity Commission’s investigation centres on whether Al-Khair Foundation maintained links to Hassan and whether its trustees exercised due diligence in vetting partners and overseeing fund usage.

The foundation said it is “fully cooperating” with the investigation and had already submitted a serious incident report to the regulator before the inquiry began.

Both the United States and the United Kingdom designate Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

According to the regulator’s records, Al-Khair Foundation reported income exceeding £74 million (US$85.5 million) for the financial year ending 31 July 2025.
