UNHCR warns 8.3 million refugees face funding gap

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees issued a warning on Tuesday regarding the potential loss of essential aid for approximately 8.3 million refugees and forcibly displaced individuals. The agency attributes this risk to significant reductions in funding, which have led to deteriorating protection services.

Funding shortfall impacts operations

According to the UNHCR, its capacity to assist and protect refugees, internally displaced persons, and stateless populations is being eroded by a persistent and worsening financing gap. Data released by the organization indicates that by the end of July, it had secured only 32 percent of the $8.5 billion required for this year’s refugee protection efforts.

US policy shifts under Trump

Since President Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second term, he has signaled intentions to reduce contributions allocated to international organizations. This political context coincides with reports from last July citing sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. These sources indicated that the Trump administration had examined severing ties with the UNHCR during recent weeks.

Diplomatic pressure influences decisions

Reuters reported that eight sources, including diplomats, humanitarian aid workers, and a congressional source, confirmed that the United States was considering ending its relationship with the agency. Historically, the US has been the largest donor to the UNHCR. The prospect of such a move prompted UN officials and diplomats to launch a campaign aimed at persuading Washington to maintain its support.

Several sources noted that while a decision was anticipated, it remained unannounced. This delay suggests that lobbying efforts may have contributed to postponing or avoiding the step, according to Reuters.
