A United States prohibition targeting a selection of Canadian goods commenced on Tuesday. The measure marks an escalation in commercial disputes between Washington and Ottawa, with alcoholic beverages specifically included in the restricted categories.

Scope of Restricted Goods

The ban became effective at 00:01 US local time, corresponding to 04:01 GMT. It encompasses various types of alcoholic drinks, such as beer, wine, and cognac. Additionally, whey—a milk-derived protein experiencing high demand—is subject to the restrictions.

Motorcycle Import Limits

The regulatory action also covers large motorcycles equipped with engines exceeding 800 cubic centimeters in capacity. This category features Canadian products that compete directly with American Harley-Davidson bikes.

Origins of the Trade Dispute

The White House announced the prohibition on September 8. This decision followed Canada’s imposition of new tariffs on American products. Those Canadian measures were responses to additional duties levied by Washington on exports from Canada.
