US Imposes Sanctions on Port Sudan Forces over 2024 Chemical Weapons Use

The United States has confirmed that forces in Port Sudan employed chemical weapons in 2024, leading to the imposition of additional sanctions on the Port Sudan government.

In an official statement, the US Department of State declared its conclusion that Port Sudan forces used chemical weapons during 2024, describing this act as a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The statement further noted that the internal committee established by the Port Sudan authority does not substitute for an independent investigation conducted by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The US indicated that, in accordance with American law, it has enacted further sanctions targeting the Port Sudan government.

Responding to the Port Sudan authority's foreign ministry statement, which rejected the US sanctions and denied the use of chemical weapons by its forces, the US Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs posted on the platform X: "Regrettably, Sudan has refused to acknowledge its use of chemical weapons, declined to take necessary steps to address the situation, and has failed to return to compliance with the provisions of the convention."
