The US State Department removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday, following congressional review, and also delisted Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, Reuters reported.
The U.S. State Department formally rescinded Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism on Monday, according to a notice issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The move, first announced earlier this year subject to congressional review, was confirmed by Reuters.
Reuters also reported that the United States revoked the terrorist designation for Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, which is also known as Jabhat al-Nusra.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated in an official announcement that the action “will help encourage greater investment in Syria, thereby strengthening political and economic stability” there, following approximately two years since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024.
