He studied biochemistry at Virginia Tech University, then joined the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, graduating as a doctor in 2003.
Hasan worked as a psychiatrist in the US Army, handling tasks related to providing psychological care to military personnel, including soldiers suffering from trauma effects.
He served at the Walter Reed Medical Center before transferring to Fort Hood in Texas in 2009. He was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan weeks before the attack.
Fort Hood Attack
On November 5, 2009, Hasan opened fire inside the Soldier Readiness Processing Center at Fort Hood, where military personnel were waiting to receive medical and administrative services. The attack resulted in the death of 13 people and injuries to 32 others.
Hasan was shot during police intervention, resulting in paralysis below the chest or waist, according to reports.
Investigations revealed that he exchanged emails before the attack with Anwar al-Awlaki, an American cleric of Yemeni origin linked to Al-Qaeda.
He had expressed opposition to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and objected to the treatment of Muslims in the army.
