Yemen Parliament Approves General Mobilization Against Houthis

The Yemeni parliament voted on Monday to declare a state of general mobilization. This measure aims to confront what lawmakers described as Houthi escalation, protect citizens, and defend the republican system and constitutional legitimacy. The decision also seeks to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mobilization Decree Details

The approval came during an extended session held via video link, chaired by Sultan Al-Barakani, the head of the council. Members reviewed a memorandum submitted by Rashad Al-Alimi, the president of the Presidential Leadership Council, who requested consent for the nationwide mobilization.

Lawmakers stated that the resolution addresses severe risks stemming from the war waged by the Houthis. They cited threats to citizens' lives, security, and stability, alongside dangers to Yemen’s unity and its republican framework.

Legal Basis and Duration

The council grounded its decision in the constitution and prevailing laws. According to the text, the mobilization takes effect immediately upon declaration. It will remain active until the underlying causes necessitating the measure cease to exist.

During the session, the parliament reiterated its condemnation of Houthi attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. Members characterized assaults on the security and sovereignty of other nations, along with threats to their territorial integrity, as escalations affecting regional and international stability.

The body also expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Arab Coalition led by Saudi Arabia to Yemen.
