Anthropic has introduced an in-app browser feature for Claude Code on desktop, allowing the AI to access and interact with web content directly within the application.

According to the ClaudeDevs account on X, “Claude Code on desktop now has an in-app browser.” This browser enables Claude to retrieve documents, designs, or any website, and to read, navigate, and interact with them similarly to how it handles local development servers. The browser operates in a sandboxed and configurable manner, giving users control over whether browsing sessions persist.

Agentic web browsing has recently attracted attention as OpenAI announced it will discontinue its ChatGPT Atlas browser in favor of the ChatGPT desktop app’s integrated browser. Both Anthropic and OpenAI offer Chrome extensions that integrate their AI tools with Google’s browser.

Anthropic’s documentation clarifies that Claude Code’s in-app browser uses a separate, clean browser profile distinct from the user’s personal browser, without access to saved logins or history. This setup is intended for app building, testing, and browsing sites that do not require user identity. For sessions needing user login states, the Claude Chrome extension is recommended, as it shares the browser’s login information.

Recently, several AI-focused browsers have been launched on the Mac platform, expanding options for users seeking integrated AI browsing experiences.

Anthropic’s announcement was accompanied by a tweet showing Claude Code’s ability to access various web resources and interact with them within the desktop environment, highlighting its sandboxed and session-persistent features.
