Apple Confirms Siri AI Features Limited to HomePod Mini 2

Apple has clarified that its upcoming artificial intelligence capabilities for the voice assistant, branded as Siri AI, will not reach the first-generation HomePod mini. The company stated these features are restricted exclusively to the newer HomePod mini 2. This confirmation follows an initial report by CNET which incorrectly suggested backward compatibility for older devices before being corrected.

Correction of Initial Compatibility Claims

CNET initially published a story claiming that the original HomePod mini, powered by the S5 chip, would receive support for Siri AI later this year alongside the iOS 27.2 update. However, Apple’s official websites and press materials contained no such assurance for the first-generation hardware. The outlet subsequently updated its article with a correction stating that Siri AI features would not appear on older HomePod models.

This revised information aligns with details Apple provided to 9to5Mac. The tech giant explicitly noted that while certain older Apple TV 4K models would gain access to these AI functions, no equivalent promise was made for existing HomePod mini users. Apple confirmed that Siri AI availability is limited to the HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K units from the second generation onward.

Hardware Constraints Drive Exclusion

The exclusion of the original HomePod mini reflects the age of its internal components. Released six years ago, the device relies on the S5 processor, which lacks the necessary capacity for advanced artificial intelligence tasks. This limitation mirrors the situation with Apple Watch, where significantly newer chips are required to enable similar Siri AI functionalities.

The decision raises questions for owners of the original speaker regarding whether the introduction of AI features in the successor model provides sufficient incentive to upgrade to the HomePod mini 2.
