Apple has sued OpenAI, accusing it of stealing trade secrets related to unreleased products, raising questions about their ongoing AI collaboration.

Apple has initiated legal action against OpenAI, accusing the company of misappropriating trade secrets and confidential information concerning products that have not yet been released to the market. This unexpected development could significantly impact the relationship between these two major technology firms.
Despite this lawsuit, the two companies continue to collaborate on integrating artificial intelligence features into Apple devices, making this dispute one of the most prominent technology conflicts of the year.
The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI orchestrated a systematic effort to recruit several former Apple employees who specialized in hardware development. The goal was to acquire engineering documents, technical specifications, and other sensitive data related to future products that Apple has not publicly disclosed.
Apple asserts that the information obtained includes engineering drawings, device components, technical specifications, and internal documents considered among its most valuable trade secrets. The company accuses OpenAI of using this data to accelerate its own AI device development efforts.
The complaint specifically names Tang Tan, former Vice President of Product Design at Apple and currently with OpenAI, along with former engineer Chang Liu. Apple claims that Liu downloaded confidential files containing information about unreleased projects and products before leaving the company.
Apple’s lawsuit seeks not only financial compensation but also requests that the court compel OpenAI to cease using any information suspected to have been obtained unlawfully. Additionally, Apple demands the destruction of all confidential materials and the redesign of any future devices found to rely on Apple-owned technologies or information.
This case holds particular significance as it arises while Apple and OpenAI continue their partnership to incorporate ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence systems, including enhancing the Siri assistant with AI capabilities. Meanwhile, OpenAI is advancing new AI hardware projects following its acquisition of io Products and the involvement of Apple's renowned designer Jony Ive in its initiatives. These factors heighten the sensitivity of the dispute and cast uncertainty over the future of cooperation between the two companies.
