Google has introduced Gemini Go, a lightweight AI assistant designed for Android Go smartphones with just 2GB of RAM, expanding AI access to budget devices globally.

On June 4, 2026, Google unveiled Gemini Go, a streamlined version of its Gemini AI assistant tailored specifically for Android Go devices that operate with as little as 2GB of RAM. This version targets budget smartphones typically priced under $100, widely used in countries such as India, Nigeria, Indonesia, and throughout Latin America.
Gemini Go replaces the previous Assistant Go, Google's simplified voice assistant for low-end hardware. It is integrated directly within the Google Search app, eliminating the need for a separate installation. Users on supported Android Go devices running Android 13 or later can activate Gemini Go by long-pressing either the Home or Power button, a familiar gesture for most Android users.
Despite the minimal hardware requirements, Gemini Go offers a comprehensive set of functions. It supports voice commands for making calls and sending texts, provides navigation and travel-time information, facilitates searches for nearby restaurants and electric vehicle charging stations, and allows users to create calendar events, set alarms, and play music. Additionally, it can process file uploads such as documents and photos to deliver more precise responses.
Google's approach involves a two-tier AI strategy: the full-featured Gemini Intelligence for high-end devices requiring 12GB of RAM, and Gemini Go for lower-tier devices. This strategy effectively phases out the Assistant brand on Android Go, integrating those users into the Gemini ecosystem to maintain a unified platform experience, albeit adjusted for hardware capabilities.
While Gemini Go is unlikely to be available on most phones in the US and UK, its deployment is significant due to Android Go's dominance in markets where billions of consumers are purchasing their first smartphones. The rollout has commenced but will be gradual, with users needing only to keep their Google Search app updated to receive the new assistant over the coming weeks.
