Gemini Live Gains Memory Feature for US Users in English
Google's Gemini Live voice assistant now remembers past conversations and uses data from linked services, but this update is limited to English speakers in the United States.

Google has introduced a memory function to Gemini Live, its voice assistant mode that operates in real time, enabling it to recall information from previous interactions and utilize data from connected Google services. While the text-based version of Gemini has supported memory for over a year, this update brings the capability to Live mode for the first time. However, the feature is currently restricted to English-speaking users located in the United States.
With memory enabled, Gemini Live retains preferences and details shared during voice sessions, allowing it to reference them in future conversations. Additionally, it can tailor responses based on user activity across linked Google services such as Search history, YouTube viewing habits, Gmail, and Workspace applications.
The memory feature activates automatically for users who have Personal Intelligence enabled in the standard Gemini app. Users can manage which connected applications contribute data by navigating to Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps within the Gemini app interface.
Gemini Live's Position Among Voice Assistants
Unlike ChatGPT’s voice mode, which has offered memory capabilities for some time, Gemini Live is a relatively recent addition to this functionality. This delay is significant as Google and Apple have announced a collaboration to integrate Gemini into Siri’s AI enhancements planned for 2026. The ability for Gemini to maintain conversational context could enhance the usefulness of this integration.
Currently, the rollout of the memory feature is uneven even within the United States. Digital Trends reports that some Android users still encounter a "coming soon" notification in their Personal Intelligence settings despite the feature being active for others. No information has been provided regarding when the feature will be available in other languages or geographic regions.
Regulatory Barriers in Europe
Users in the European Union, as well as in the United Kingdom following Brexit, are not expected to receive this memory feature in the near future. Google’s personal intelligence tools have experienced ongoing delays in Europe due to regulatory frameworks such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Digital Services Act, and forthcoming AI Act compliance requirements. The Data Protection Commission in Ireland is currently investigating Google’s AI model development practices. Features involving memory that process personal data face particularly stringent scrutiny under these regulations.
Google has not clarified whether the memory functionality is included in existing Gemini subscription tiers or if it will be part of a paid plan. Users in the United States who have access to the feature can find comprehensive setup instructions on the Gemini Apps Help page.
