McDonald’s deploys an AI platform to suggest restaurant-specific menu prices in the US and abroad, sparking scrutiny over franchisee autonomy.
An artificial intelligence system now suggests menu prices for individual McDonald’s restaurants across the United States and select international markets. The platform processes millions of transaction records to estimate local customer willingness to pay, a method that may increase price disparities between nearby outlets.
In Fresno, California, Reuters identified a 21% difference in the cost of a Big Mac at two locations situated approximately 2 miles apart. The news organization could not verify if this specific variance resulted directly from algorithmic recommendations.
While McDonald’s states the tool offers suggestions rather than automatic pricing, with final authority resting with franchisees, five owners told Reuters they experienced pressure to adopt the system. These operators reported that the company monitors deviations from the recommended price points.
Pricing algorithms attract significant attention due to their potential impact on local consumer costs. McDonald’s franchisee portal reportedly advises operators to adhere to antitrust regulations. The central unresolved issue concerns the degree of influence these recommendations hold when franchisees decide whether to accept or reject them.
