Meta launches Glimmer: Open-weight 30B AI model for local agent execution on consumer hardware

Meta has launched Muse Glimmer — a 30-billion-parameter, open-weight AI model — designed to run AI agents directly on consumer-grade Mac and PC hardware equipped with a single GPU. The release marks the company’s most concrete step to date toward realizing CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s stated goal of “personal superintelligence.”

Open weights under Apache 2.0 license

Glimmer is an open version of Muse Spark, Meta’s most powerful closed-model AI system introduced in April. Its model weights are publicly available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, enabling developers to download, modify, and deploy the model without restriction. Unlike Muse Spark, which remains proprietary and inaccessible for local adaptation, Glimmer is built for transparency and user-level control.

Local execution and multimodal capability

The model supports both text and image inputs and was trained across more than 100 languages. It enables AI agents to perform extended, multi-step workflows — including calling external tools, writing and debugging code, interacting with files and screenshots, and executing complex tasks autonomously. Crucially, all processing occurs on-device, eliminating the need to transmit personal data to remote servers.

Zuckerberg’s letter reiterates empowerment framework

In a letter issued Monday, Zuckerberg reaffirmed that broad distribution of superintelligence “has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment where individuals can use this powerful new capability to reach their full potential, pursue their interests, and improve their lives and the world more than ever before.” He outlined specific applications: a 24/7 personal agent managing relationships, health, career, finances, home management, hobbies, and more; tools to launch businesses or accelerate scientific progress; and universal free or affordable access to these capabilities.

Drawing the line between owned and controlled intelligence

While Glimmer is fully downloadable and locally operable, Muse Spark — its more capable counterpart — remains closed-weight and under Meta’s exclusive control. This distinction reflects an emerging operational boundary: Glimmer represents the tier of intelligence Meta intends for users to own, adapt, and run independently; Muse Spark embodies the higher-tier capability Meta retains centrally. The release thus serves as an early indicator of how Meta plans to calibrate openness against safety, performance, and strategic control.
