Meta has announced a significant update to the models powering its Meta AI assistant and digital agent, Muse. The new features aim to improve how these tools retain critical information from previous conversations and continue executing tasks when encountering unexpected issues, rather than stopping or requiring users to repeat instructions. This upgrade relies on two technologies adapted from the advanced Muse Wonder model: Active Memory and Active Focus. The improved models are scheduled for rollout to Muse and Meta AI users, while Muse Wonder remains available to subscribers for handling more complex tasks.

Enhanced Context Retention Capabilities

The Active Memory technology provides greater ability to preserve important details from past interactions. It distinguishes between temporary information, user preferences, and long-term useful data. This allows the AI assistant to leverage prior context during multi-day tasks, such as travel planning or activity organization, without needing users to re-enter budgets or preferences in each new conversation.

According to Meta, the updated models are 2.4 times less likely to forget essential information. Internal tests demonstrated that the new systems correctly utilize context and key data in 90% of tasks, compared to 76% in previous versions.

Improved Error Handling and Task Completion

The second technology, Active Focus, targets the AI's capacity to navigate obstacles during task execution. When a website crashes, a booking process halts, or an unforeseen problem arises, the system can attempt alternative methods instead of failing. Meta stated that this feature improved the models' ability to complete daily tasks by 67% when facing unexpected issues.

Active Focus also enhances the AI's capability to identify situations it can handle independently versus those requiring user intervention. The updates enable the assistant to respond to user corrections and adjust execution steps in real time, moving away from rigid adherence to a single plan that might not succeed.

Strategic Shift Toward Specialized Digital Agents

This development reflects Meta's strategy to build specialized artificial intelligence models for everyday tasks by leveraging the capabilities of the more advanced Muse Wonder, rather than relying on a single model for all functions. The company aims to transform its assistants from simple question-answering tools into digital agents capable of executing tasks, following instructions, and resolving problems.

Meta AI is accessible through several of the company's applications, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Meanwhile, Muse is designed to deliver a personal assistant experience focused on task completion. Meta bets that improvements in memory and error correction will make these smart assistants more effective for daily use, amid ongoing competition among tech firms to develop AI agents that perform actions rather than just engage in conversation.
