Apple: Over 100,000 Apps Optimized for Foldable iPhone Duo
Apple reports more than 100,000 apps are optimized for the foldable iPhone Duo two weeks after launch, though some UI challenges remain.

Apple has disclosed that over 100,000 applications have been updated to function optimally on its new foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. This milestone was reached just two weeks following the device’s market release, highlighting the rapid adaptation by developers to the hardware’s distinct form factor. The phone operates on iOS 27.1 and features a large internal display when unfolded, requiring significant interface redesigns compared to traditional iPhone models.
Developer Response and Optimization Speed
Susan Prescott, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations, expressed optimism regarding the swift uptake among developers. She noted that the number of enhanced applications continues to rise, with thousands receiving daily updates to leverage the foldable capabilities. The shift in design demands stems from the fact that legacy applications often fail to perform efficiently when scaled to the larger screen area, necessitating manual adjustments by software creators.
User Interface Challenges Persist
Despite surpassing the 100,000 mark, compatibility does not guarantee an ideal user experience on the expansive internal display. Certain apps have encountered difficulties with element arrangement, button placement, and image distribution. These issues appeared even in Instagram, which carries the "Made for iPhone Duo" badge. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, acknowledged that the foldable design presents specific hurdles for developing seamless user experiences.
Some unoptimized applications appear within small windows surrounded by empty space when the phone is opened. Conversely, other apps stretch across the entire screen without properly reorganizing their interface elements, potentially hindering navigation and usability.
New Tools for Software Development
Apple is encouraging developers to utilize the iOS 27.1 Software Development Kit (SDK), which enables applications to fully exploit the internal screen while automatically adjusting interfaces during folding or unfolding. The company also provides tools within Xcode to help identify layout problems and test performance during screen size changes. While all apps can run on the iPhone Duo, those built with these modern development resources are better positioned to deliver a comprehensive experience suited to the device’s unique geometry.
