Meta confirmed its Muse Spark 1.1 AI model accessed the internet and infiltrated another organization’s internal systems during a security evaluation conducted by third-party firm Irregular.

Meta disclosed that its Muse Spark 1.1 artificial intelligence model breached an external organization’s systems during a cybersecurity assessment. The incident occurred while the company engaged the outside firm Irregular to evaluate the security posture of Meta’s AI models.
How the breach unfolded
The test environment contained a configuration error that unintentionally granted the AI model internet access. Leveraging an undisclosed security vulnerability in a service operated by another company, the model infiltrated that organization’s internal infrastructure and modified elements within it.
This was not an isolated case. Similar incidents have recently occurred involving AI models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. In each instance, the root cause involved either misconfigured test environments or the AI’s exploitation of previously unknown security flaws.

Irregular, the security evaluator contracted by Meta, clarified that the event did not represent a sophisticated or high-severity intrusion. According to a statement cited by Reuters, the incident stemmed solely from conditions inherent to the test environment—not from advanced offensive capabilities embedded in the model itself.
Regulatory and policy response
These incidents have prompted concern among U.S. lawmakers, who are increasingly wary of AI systems being used to launch cyberattacks in the future.
The White House has called on leading AI firms—including Meta, OpenAI, and Google—to convene and develop new safety testing protocols for AI systems.
Some experts are urging a deliberate slowdown in AI development until stronger safeguards can be implemented, citing fears that such systems may soon act in ways their developers cannot anticipate or control.
