OpenAI has integrated a new security function into its ChatGPT application designed to protect user data and conversation history. The update introduces a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) that allows individuals to lock specific chats within their accounts.

How the PIN protection works

According to a statement released by the company, the conversation locking feature is being rolled out gradually. When enabled, locked chats remain accessible in the user's account but are hidden from the general conversation log, pinned items, and search results. This mechanism aims to preserve the privacy of sensitive discussions, particularly when screen sharing or using a device with other people.

The functionality will be available across multiple subscription tiers. OpenAI confirmed that the feature supports the free version of ChatGPT, as well as Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu editions.

Data deletion risks upon reset

The company issued a critical warning regarding the management of these credentials. Resetting the account PIN triggers the permanent deletion of all locked conversations. This action also removes information stored exclusively within those chats, along with files and other content protected solely by the previous PIN code.

OpenAI emphasized that this process is irreversible. Once the data is deleted following a PIN reset, neither the user nor the OpenAI support team can recover the lost information.

Prior reports from TASS agency, citing the "Pay Global" study, indicated that ChatGPT had become the most used foreign service during September. The study noted a 47% increase in purchase operations for the month compared to August.

This surge allowed the service to surpass competitors such as the App Store, iCloud, and Apple Music. Those three services had previously topped the list of purchase operations in July and August.
