Qatar amasses empty LNG carriers in Gulf waters
Qatar has gathered at least 12 empty liquefied natural gas carriers in Gulf waters, signaling potential readiness to boost shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar Energy has assembled a fleet of empty liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers in the Gulf, positioning itself as one of the world’s top fuel exporters potentially preparing to increase transit volumes via the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic accumulation suggests an intent to ramp up shipping activity despite regional tensions.
Strategic buildup near Qatar
An analysis conducted by Bloomberg, utilizing satellite imagery and vessel tracking data, identified at least 12 vacant LNG carriers owned or leased by Qatar Energy waiting in waters proximate to the country. Collectively, these vessels possess the capacity to transport approximately 1.1 million tons of liquefied gas. This volume represents roughly 2% of the total global tanker fleet's carrying capability.
Risks in the Strait of Hormuz
There remains no certainty that these ships will navigate through Hormuz once loaded, particularly given the escalation of attacks within the strait. On Tuesday, the Greek News Agency reported, citing the Greek Ministry of Shipping, that a Greek-owned LNG tanker sustained damage from a foreign object impact while sailing near the waterway.
Impact on global gas prices
The prospect of additional supply flowing into the market could help stabilize global gas prices, which surged last month to their highest levels since late 2022 across Asia and Europe. Increased shipment volumes may alleviate pressure on these elevated costs.
Shipping trends amid conflict
LNG tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz reached its peak level since the onset of war in September 2026. However, current shipment volumes remain approximately 75% lower than those recorded in February 2026, prior to the US-Israeli attack on Iran.
