Gerrit Coetzee, a 58-year-old lawyer and businessman residing in the northern Free State of South Africa, has issued a public advertisement seeking a second wife. The notice outlines a detailed set of requirements for prospective brides, including an age range of 16 to 25, virginity, non-smoking status, and adherence to faith-based values that respect male headship in the household.

The search for an heir

A 58-year-old South African lawyer has sparked fury by advertising for a second wife aged 16-25 with a R100,000 bride price - and his wife of 25 years will help choose her.

Coetzee has been married to his wife Andrea, 43, for 25 years. Although they have no children because he previously did not want them, he now expresses a desire for an "heir" to inherit his wealth. He argues that without children, his assets would pass to the state under inheritance laws. "For every seven years you don’t have children, a generation dies out," Coetzee stated. "I’m sitting in a situation of ‘who is going to inherit my things?’"

The couple lives in a triple-storey mansion on a farmstead. Polygamy is legal in South Africa under specific rules for customary marriages. Coetzee defended the lower age limit by insisting that significant time would be required to get to know a partner and their family before marriage or children could occur. "People don’t read with understanding and they fixate on the 16-year thing," he said. "This isn’t something that’s going to happen overnight."

Financial incentives and religious justification

The advertisement, reportedly published in a newspaper, offers a "substantial financial package." This includes a R100,000 bride price for the parents and R5 million in estate provision for the bride. Coetzee explained that the bride price serves as proof from parents that their daughters are virgins at 16, citing it as a "Biblical prescription that the woman must be a virgin when she enters marriage."

Regarding alternative methods for having children, such as in vitro fertilisation or surrogacy, Coetzee described them as "time-consuming and expensive." He noted complications with medical suitability tests and surrogacy procedures. The process involves a formal family introduction meeting with the "head wife" of the house, which Andrea holds.

Public reaction and internal dynamics

The ad garnered widespread attention on social media, drawing criticism and mockery. Andrea responded to negative comments suggesting women would be chained up or kept in basements, calling the reactions "laughable." Coetzee added that some online users accused him of being a serial killer who would prevent parents from seeing their daughters again. Despite the backlash, the couple proceeded with the call-out after "long conversations."

Andrea stated she was not shocked by the proposal to practice polygamy, viewing it as a "voyage" and a "new adventure." She emphasized her accommodation of his desire for children. "If it’s done alongside my beloved, then so it shall be," she said. "I’ll be able to determine later what works for me and what doesn’t."

Selection process and future plans

A panel comprising Andrea, legal professionals, doctors, and a minister will sift through applications to compile a shortlist. Coetzee revealed he had to reject one applicant, a 74-year-old woman, because she "didn’t meet the criteria." The idea of polygamy arose two years ago, which Coetzee defends by noting that ancestors practiced it and that it provides an opportunity for men to leave a legacy if they are not fertile.

If a second wife is found, the couple hopes for at least one child, ideally both a son and a daughter. They envision the home becoming an "ordinary household." The advertisement concluded by welcoming "friendly and sincere applications or enquiries for further details."
