Canada Becomes First World Cup Host to Play Outside Its Borders
Canada will play its round of 32 World Cup match in Los Angeles after losing to Switzerland, marking the first time a host nation competes outside its own country.

Following a 1-2 defeat to Switzerland in the final match of Group B, Canada was compelled to travel south to Los Angeles for its round of 32 World Cup encounter against South Africa.
A win or a draw against Switzerland would have allowed Canada to remain in Vancouver for the knockout stages of the tournament.
Canada's defender, Alistair Johnston, told reporters on Friday, "Of course, we wished to stay in Vancouver, and we were serious about that."
Meanwhile, the United States and Mexico, the other two host nations for the 2026 World Cup, each topped their respective groups, securing their round of 32 matches on home soil within their own borders.
It is worth noting that although Japan and South Korea co-hosted the 2002 World Cup, neither national team played matches in the other host country.
