Mikel Arteta declared his conscience clear when pressed on his former role at Manchester City, as the club’s appeal against findings of financial misconduct continues. The Arsenal manager addressed the issue for the first time since an independent commission concluded that Premier League rules had been breached during the years he served under Pep Guardiola.

Response to past tenure allegations

Arteta worked as Guardiola’s assistant from 2016 to 2019, a timeframe directly overlapping with the investigations into revenue concealment and other violations. When asked if he felt comfortable about his time at the Etihad Stadium, he offered a brief affirmative: "Yes." He subsequently refused to elaborate on whether he had discussed the case with Guardiola, stating, "I'd rather not answer these questions."

The Spanish coach emphasized the necessity of respecting legal protocols while the appeal remains pending. Regarding accusations that City used sham contracts with commercial partners to mask true revenues, Arteta noted the importance of adhering to procedures and timelines. He asserted that neither he nor the club would provide further commentary until the matter is fully resolved.

Trust in judicial process

Arteta declined to specify whether sanctions should be finalized within the current season to maintain competitive integrity. Instead, he expressed confidence in the individuals managing the proceedings. "There are people responsible for this process and for making the right decisions, and I am confident the matter will be resolved in the appropriate way," he said. "We have to trust in that."

Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding one of the league's top teams, Arteta reaffirmed his belief that the Premier League remains the best competition globally. His comments were reported by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Arsenal’s immediate focus

The managerial remarks coincide with Arsenal’s preparation for a Saturday match against fifth-placed Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners are seeking another victory to sustain their position at the summit of the table. Currently, they trail league leaders Manchester City by three points.
