Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick presented Mikel Arteta with his extended contract using a vintage writing desk from the club's founding era.

Arsenal marked the extension of manager Mikel Arteta’s contract by presenting it within a historical artifact dating back to the club’s origins. The London-based football organization revealed that Chief Executive Officer Richard Garlick handed the document to Arteta inside an antique box, which transforms into a small writing desk when opened.
The history of this specific object traces back to October 4, 1886, during a gathering hosted by the Dial Square cricket club. This group consisted of workers employed at the Royal Arsenal armaments complex in Woolwich and convened to celebrate the end of their season.
David Danskin, recognized as Arsenal’s first captain, attended the event where attendees agreed to establish a football section within the existing cricket club. This decision initiated the narrative of the football entity now known as Arsenal.
Elijah Watkins served as secretary for both the cricket and newly formed football clubs. He received the box as a token of appreciation for his contributions during the season and to support his dual responsibilities.
Watkins later organized Arsenal’s inaugural match against Eastern Wanderers on December 11, 1886. The game concluded with a 6–0 victory for the team. According to the club, Watkins’ account remains the sole source detailing the specifics of that encounter.
Arsenal noted that the box has been preserved to this day as a heritage piece witnessing the club’s formation. It features a two-part writing surface connected by hinges, creating a slanted area for papers when unfolded.
Garlick described the method of delivering the contract as a connection between the past, present, and future. He emphasized the importance of maintaining Arsenal’s values and traditions through such gestures.
This presentation coincided with the announcement extending Arteta’s tenure until June 2030. The move follows his leadership of the squad to win the Premier League title in the previous season.
