Barcelona’s Dual Path for Hamza Abdelkarim and Jesse Piessens

Catalan outlet Sport reported on Tuesday that FC Barcelona has adopted two distinct developmental trajectories for two of its most promising young talents: Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim and Belgian winger Jesse Piessens. The pair share nearly identical birth dates—Abdelkarim born on 1 January 2008, Piessens on 22 January 2008—separated by just 21 days.

First-team integration versus reserve exposure

Both players train daily with Barcelona’s senior squad, the blaugrana first team. However, Abdelkarim has not been required to drop down to the reserve side for competitive match minutes, whereas Piessens regularly features for the B team.

Limited senior minutes for Abdelkarim

Abdelkarim has accumulated only four official minutes this season across six matches played by the senior side—five in La Liga and one in the UEFA Champions League. His sole appearance came against Rayo Vallecano. In contrast, Piessens has yet to make a competitive debut for the first team.

Competition at centre-forward

According to Sport, Abdelkarim currently occupies a relatively stronger position than Piessens in terms of first-team visibility: he is named in every matchday squad but faces stiff positional competition. At centre-forward—the Egyptian’s natural role—he contends directly with Raphinha, who has cemented himself as the team’s primary goalscoring threat, and with Brazilian international Gabriel Jesus, whose established career trajectory adds further depth.

Piessens’ path and left-wing challenges

Piessens’ route appears more complex. Head coach Hansi Flick intends to continue developing him primarily with the reserve side. Even if selected for a senior matchday squad, Piessens would confront fierce competition on the left wing from Anthony Gordon and Alejandro Balde—both right-footed players who operate on the opposite flank, a dynamic mirrored by Piessens’ own left-footed preference.

Rotation dynamics and Jesus’ cameo

The report notes that should Flick opt for rotation ahead of Wednesday’s match against Racing Santander, Gabriel Jesus would logically be prioritised for minutes. Jesus has so far logged just 16 minutes for Barcelona: nine against Valencia at Mestalla and seven in his Champions League debut versus Feyenoord in Rotterdam—during which he scored a goal.

Contract security and transfer fee

Despite the competitive environment, Barcelona’s institutional confidence in both prospects remains evident. Abdelkarim recently extended his contract until 30 June 2030, with a release clause set at €150 million. Meanwhile, the club paid €8.5 million to acquire Piessens.

Shared reality beneath divergent plans

Sport concluded that while the developmental pathways for Abdelkarim and Piessens differ structurally, their underlying reality converges: breaking into a star-studded first-team roster remains exceptionally difficult for both.
