Bayern Munich Pursue Josko Gvardiol Amid Barcelona and Man City Talks
Bayern Munich have initiated formal inquiries for Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol, competing with Barcelona's efforts to sign the Croatian defender this summer.

Josko Gvardiol has emerged as a key target for several top European clubs, with Bayern Munich already making formal approaches to Manchester City regarding the defender. Barcelona is also actively pursuing the Croatian international as part of their summer transfer plans.
Barcelona has prioritized Gvardiol on their defensive shortlist while simultaneously negotiating for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. Reports from El Partidazo de COPE indicate that the Spanish champions consider a deal for Gvardiol achievable, despite facing strong competition from Bayern Munich, who are intent on reinforcing their defense.
Bayern’s Renewed Interest in Defensive Reinforcements
Lothar Matthaus, the German football legend, confirmed Bayern Munich's interest in Gvardiol during a Sky broadcast. Matthaus stated, "I have a player in mind and I have heard that inquiries are already being made. A former Bundesliga player from Leipzig, currently playing for Manchester City, left-back, can also play in the centre. His name is Gvardiol."
This confirmation has intensified speculation around the 24-year-old defender, who previously played for RB Leipzig before joining Manchester City.
Manchester City’s Plans to Retain Gvardiol
Despite Bayern’s contact with Gvardiol’s representatives, Manchester City is focused on securing the player’s long-term future. TEAMtalk reports that City is preparing contract extension talks to extend his current deal beyond 2028, reflecting their €90 million investment and belief in his importance to the squad.
Gvardiol has been a reliable presence under Pep Guardiola since 2023, although a fractured tibia limited him to 18 Premier League appearances this season.
Defensive Challenges Prompt Bayern’s Interest
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany views Gvardiol as a valuable summer addition amid defensive uncertainties at the Allianz Arena. Fitness issues affecting Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito, combined with speculation surrounding Kim Min-jae’s potential departure, have increased the urgency for Bayern to strengthen their backline.
Meanwhile, Barcelona faces financial complexities that could impact their ability to complete transfers for both Gvardiol and Alvarez.
