Excess vitamin C does not prevent respiratory infections, expert warns
Occupational disease specialist Svetlana Bornatskaya states that high doses of vitamin C do not protect against acute viral respiratory infections and may cause health issues.

Svetlana Bornatskaya, an occupational disease specialist, stated that while vitamin C is essential for normal bodily functions, taking extra doses does not provide protection against acute viral respiratory infections. She noted that the widespread belief that effervescent tablets, powders, or pills "boost immunity" during cold and flu season is incorrect.
Misconceptions about antioxidant intake
Bornatskaya explained that the idea that increasing antioxidant quantity leads to better protection is an oversimplification with potential health consequences. Although antioxidants help protect cells from damage, the body does not require large amounts. The key factor is balance rather than the principle that more is always better.
The doctor addressed a common myth regarding water-soluble vitamins, specifically the belief that the body simply excretes excess vitamin C through urine, making high doses harmless. While it is true that vitamin C is water-soluble, this does not mean it can be consumed without restrictions.
Risks of exceeding recommended dosages
Large doses of vitamin C can cause nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Additionally, excessive consumption increases the risk of kidney stone formation in individuals who are predisposed to this condition. Symptoms of overconsumption often manifest in the digestive system, including cramps and gastrointestinal distress.
According to Bornatskaya, a balanced diet containing fruits, vegetables, and berries is sufficient to meet the body's vitamin C needs. Dietary supplements should primarily be used when a deficiency is confirmed or in specific medical situations. It is advisable not to exceed recommended doses without necessity.
Role of supplements in overall health
The specialist emphasized that antioxidants do not offer comprehensive protection against all diseases. The body maintains its own equilibrium of protective substances. The purpose of vitamin intake is not to replace proper nutrition, sleep, and appropriate treatment, but to complement them only when there is a genuine need.
