Arsenal have agreed a fee for Bruno Guimaraes, who has passed his medical and signed a four-year contract, while Vinicius Jr has committed to Real Madrid with a new six-year deal.
Arsenal have confirmed a transfer agreement for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who has completed his medical and signed a four-year contract. The move follows the club’s unsuccessful pursuit of Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid announced a new six-year contract for Vinicius Jr, formally ending any possibility of his transfer to Arsenal. The Brazilian winger posted on Instagram: “Eight years at the Bernabeu are too short...Six more years, and then forever.”
In an official statement, Real Madrid said: “Vinicius Jr has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history.”
Guimaraes becomes the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s 2026 summer signings, joining Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie, and Illan Meslier. Arsenal are no longer pursuing Vinicius Jr and are redirecting attention toward other targets.
The signing of Guimaraes presents a tactical challenge for Declan Rice. The England international has appeared in 158 matches for Arsenal primarily as a No. 8, functioning as the team’s main creative presence in central midfield.
With Guimaraes operating in a similar advanced midfield role, Rice may be asked to assume a deeper No. 6 position. Analyst Jay Bothroyd assessed the pairing as “up there” among the Premier League’s finest midfield combinations.
Arsenal remain interested in Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, though Villa’s £60 million valuation is reportedly higher than the Gunners’ budget. The club’s interest stems from William Saliba’s back injury sustained during the World Cup.
Liverpool have emerged as potential rivals for Konsa amid their own defensive concerns: Joe Gomez suffered a pre-season injury, Jeremy Jacquet has yet to feature, and Virgil van Dijk remains unavailable following the World Cup.
Aston Villa manager Andoni Iraola acknowledged the Reds’ need: “With the centre-back, with the right-back situation, in terms of defensive depth, we are, I think, very thin right now so I think it's a solution that we are trying to find, yes.”
