Javier Clemente has humorously claimed responsibility for the achievements of Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, and Luis de la Fuente, crediting their accomplishments to the lessons they absorbed while playing under his management. The former Spain coach reflected on the guidance he provided to these three, whom he considers among the best in their field.

These coaches have now firmly established themselves as leading figures in football. Luis Enrique recently won his second Champions League title with Paris Saint-Germain, marking his third overall after earlier successes with Barcelona. This achievement places him alongside Guardiola, who also holds three Champions League trophies earned during his time with Barcelona and Manchester City. Guardiola recently ended a ten-year spell at Manchester City, a period during which the club secured every major trophy. Clemente attributed their current prominence in European football to the period they spent as players in his teams.

When asked to identify the top contemporary coaches, Clemente immediately named Guardiola, Enrique, and Spain’s current coach Luis de la Fuente as the foremost figures. He linked their present-day accomplishments to their development under his leadership within the national team setup. Clemente said, “For me the two best are Luis Enrique and Pep. And now 'Luisito' de la Fuente, the three. The three have passed through my hands, something I will have taught them.”

Describing his mentorship style, Clemente noted that his teaching emphasized practical experience and emotional resilience rather than tactical intricacies. He stated, “I have taught them two things: one, what you do not have to do because you already see what result it gives and the other, laugh all you can because they will take the smile from your lips.” This approach appears to have contributed to the ongoing success of his former players, with De la Fuente recently winning Euro 2024 and Enrique and Guardiola maintaining their records in major tournaments.

Looking ahead to the new season, each of the three coaches faces distinct challenges. Guardiola is expected to take a break after leaving Manchester City this summer. Luis Enrique aims to build on his Champions League success with PSG, while Luis de la Fuente is preparing the Spanish national team for the World Cup.
