Reports have revealed that Mohamed Salah played a significant role in Liverpool’s decision to part ways with Dutch head coach Arne Slot, who was officially dismissed in a statement on Saturday evening, days after the conclusion of the Premier League season.

Slot’s sacking came one week following Salah’s departure from Anfield, when the player decided to leave the club one year before his contract was set to expire in June 2027.

Salah endured a difficult season marked not only by performance issues but also by a tense relationship with Slot, particularly after the Dutch coach benched him for three consecutive Premier League matches in December.

How Did Salah Influence Liverpool’s Crisis Management?

The Mirror highlighted the tension between Salah and Slot after the coach’s dismissal through eight key points:

The conflict began in November when Slot made extensive changes to the lineup during a period of poor team form, including benching Salah in the match against West Ham, ending the player’s streak of 53 consecutive Premier League appearances.

Salah was reportedly unhappy about remaining on the bench throughout the game, which Liverpool won 2-0.

Following a 3-3 draw with Leeds in December, where Salah was again on the bench for the third straight match, the forward expressed his frustration in the mixed zone after the game, accusing Slot of “sacrificing him” and unfairly blaming him for the team’s struggles.

In response to Salah’s public comments, Slot excluded him from the traveling squad for the Champions League match against Inter Milan.

The coach and the club’s board felt that the public criticism of the coaching staff had crossed a line, although they later attempted to resolve the issue in a meeting intended to clarify matters.

Escalation Through Social Media and Team Division

Despite a temporary truce, tensions resurfaced in May after a 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa, when Salah posted a fiery statement calling for a return to the aggressive attacking style associated with former manager Jürgen Klopp.

Salah claimed that this style was the identity the club needed to recover, a message widely interpreted as a direct and public rejection of Slot’s more controlled and patient approach.

The situation escalated from a personal dispute to an organizational crisis when most of the first-team players, including Florian Wirtz—the club’s record signing—liked Salah’s anti-Slot social media post.

This display of solidarity among players highlighted a rift between the coach and the dressing room.

Salah’s Departure and Liverpool’s Future Challenges

Salah shared an emotional farewell video confirming his exit from Anfield at the end of the season.

Although he had previously signed a contract extension, the deterioration of his relationship with Slot convinced the "Egyptian King" that his nine-year tenure in Merseyside was over.

In the statement announcing Slot’s dismissal, Liverpool praised the Dutch coach for winning the title the previous year but acknowledged the need for change.

The board expressed gratitude for Slot’s past success and noted that the search was underway for a new coach capable of restoring the club’s traditional identity.

Liverpool now faces a major summer overhaul, aiming to replace both its manager and its greatest modern-era goal scorer.

While Slot leaves with a somewhat damaged reputation, Salah departs as a free agent and club legend, leaving the new management with a challenging task ahead.
