Erik Ten Hag Aims to Reunite with Wout Weghorst at FC Twente
Erik Ten Hag, now sporting director at FC Twente, seeks to bring former Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst back to the club for the upcoming season.

Erik Ten Hag has embarked on a new chapter as sporting director at FC Twente and is aiming to strengthen the team by reuniting with striker Wout Weghorst, whom he previously signed during his time at Manchester United.
This appointment marks Ten Hag’s first role in a technical capacity, shifting from his former coaching positions. The former Ajax manager will face various challenges as he attempts to establish success in this new position.
Ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United
When Ten Hag was appointed Manchester United manager, expectations were high that he would introduce the dynamic and attractive style of play he had implemented at Ajax. However, his tenure did not meet these hopes.
Over 128 matches in charge, Ten Hag’s United side secured 72 wins but was criticized for uninspiring football, resulting in a disappointing win rate. Despite this, he led the team to an FA Cup victory, defeating Manchester City 2-1 in the final, and promoted academy talents like Kobbie Mainoo to the first team.
Transition to FC Twente
Following a brief and unsuccessful period at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was dismissed after three games, Ten Hag returned to FC Twente, the club where he began his coaching career, now as sporting director.
With the current transfer window open, Ten Hag has his first opportunity to shape the squad and is expected to pursue several new signings. During World Cup punditry, he expressed interest in re-signing a former United player.
Interest in Wout Weghorst
Ten Hag brought Wout Weghorst to Manchester United on a six-month loan in January 2023. Despite making 31 appearances, the Dutch striker scored only twice and had limited goal contributions in the Premier League, leading to underwhelming performances.
Nevertheless, Ten Hag remains keen on reuniting with Weghorst at FC Twente. Speaking to Dutch outlet Tubantia, Ten Hag stated: “At Twente, we are naturally always interested in Wout Weghorst. He is a boy with true Twente roots. We are incredibly proud of everything Wout has achieved.”
He added, “I have known Wout and the Weghorst family for a very long time. Back then, Wout was just a little boy playing for NEO. Of course, I would love to have him on the team. Who wouldn’t want a striker like Wout Weghorst?”
Ten Hag also acknowledged that Weghorst’s current focus is on the World Cup: “Wout is focusing on the World Cup right now. He wants to become world champion.”
If the Netherlands wins the World Cup this summer, Ten Hag could strengthen his standing with FC Twente supporters by signing a World Cup winner.
