Ten Hag details United's failed Kane pursuit and squad flaws
Erik ten Hag reveals he fought for Harry Kane, but United chiefs deemed the transfer too expensive despite the striker's willingness to join.

Erik ten Hag has detailed his unsuccessful campaign to bring Harry Kane to Old Trafford, stating that club leadership rejected the move on financial grounds. The former manager confirmed that while the England captain was open to a switch from Tottenham Hotspur, United’s hierarchy lacked the appetite to engage with chairman Daniel Levy.
Kane’s departure and Bayern success
The 2023 window presented United with a chance to sign Kane after his bid for Manchester City collapsed. With the striker signaling his desire to leave Spurs, Bayern Munich capitalized on United’s hesitation. Since joining the Bundesliga side, Kane has netted 157 goals in 155 appearances, secured two league titles, and emerged as a leading contender for the Ballon d’Or.
In contrast, United acquired Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, a deal widely regarded as ineffective. The Danish forward has since moved to Napoli as the club cut ties, leaving them without a reliable striker. Current options Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee have yet to prove their consistency at the highest level.
Internal decision-making process
Speaking to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, Ten Hag emphasized his singular focus on one target. “I said to them, ‘I want only one player — and you know who,'” he recalled. He noted that although Kane was positive about the potential move, the Dutchman never spoke directly with the player regarding the transfer.
Ten Hag admitted he remained unaware of the internal deliberations involving John Murtough, Richard Arnold, and the Glazer family. “They came to the conclusion. I don’t have the insights in the financials,” he stated. Ultimately, the operation was deemed too costly, resulting in a refusal of his request.
Midfield targets and tactical identity
Beyond the striker search, United also missed out on Frenkie de Jong and Declan Rice during Ten Hag’s tenure. Both players went on to win major honors with Barcelona and Arsenal respectively. Ten Hag clarified that he did not handle negotiations or financial discussions, though he facilitated meetings with De Jong involving senior executives.
Regarding Rice, the manager pointed to West Ham’s reluctance to sell as the primary obstacle. “The issue was that West Ham didn’t want to let him go. I think we could have done more to test,” he explained. He stressed that the club requires outstanding talent to fulfill its mandate for dynamic, attacking football.
Ten Hag outlined the specific profiles demanded by the board: possession-based play in the opponent’s half, counter-pressing, and adventure football suited to the Theatre of Dreams. He identified a lack of goals as the most significant challenge across his three years, alongside deficiencies in centre-back and central midfield positions.
United are scheduled to face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.
