FIFA Backs Infantino Amid Mounting Electoral Challenges and Alleged Coordinated Campaign

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is confronting the most intense political storm of his professional career.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) issued an official statement affirming its full backing of Infantino. The statement emphasized that any electoral process must strictly comply with FIFA’s statutes and its established democratic procedures.

Infantino faces growing opposition, particularly from UEFA—the Union of European Football Associations—which seeks his removal. This push follows a series of controversial decisions and proposals attributed to him, including a plan to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup to private investors. Infantino ultimately withdrew that proposal under pressure.

According to a recent report by the British newspaper The Telegraph, UEFA provided financial compensation to one of its employees linked to Infantino during his tenure as UEFA’s Secretary General.

A FIFA spokesperson, speaking Sunday morning via the organization’s official social media accounts, stated: “In affirmation of recent statements issued by CONMEBOL and CAF, as well as ongoing discussions with member associations and continental confederations worldwide, FIFA will not support, facilitate, or tolerate any process related to the election of a president that fails to conform to FIFA’s statutes, democratic procedures, and adopted governance framework.”

The spokesperson added: “The FIFA President was elected democratically by FIFA’s member associations and continues to carry out his duties under the mandate granted to him.”

Coordinated Efforts to Undermine FIFA

The statement continued: “It is becoming increasingly evident that there are coordinated and sustained efforts by certain parties to undermine both FIFA and its President. Those who lack the support of FIFA’s member associations should not attempt to achieve through unsubstantiated claims, insinuations, or misleading information what they cannot accomplish via FIFA’s established democratic processes.”

It further noted: “Recent media coverage has included assertions unsupported by evidence and demonstrably false allegations concerning FIFA and its President. Speculation and insinuation must not be presented as fact, and repetition does not render an allegation true.”

"Change Challenges Established Interests"

The statement defended Infantino’s record: “The FIFA President has dedicated more than 30 years of his professional life to European and global football, contributing significantly to major transformations in the sport—particularly in expanding access to football, resources, and opportunities across all regions of the world. Change inevitably challenges entrenched interests, yet disagreement with that change cannot justify attempts to undermine the democratic mandate conferred upon the FIFA President or the institution he was elected to lead.”

It added: “FIFA welcomes legitimate scrutiny, but scrutiny is not a license to distort facts, amplify unsubstantiated allegations, or fabricate distractions designed to derail progress. When media coverage is inaccurate or misleading, FIFA will respond directly and robustly.”

The statement concluded: “FIFA bears responsibility toward its 211 member associations and toward football globally. We will not allow our attention to be diverted or our course altered from strengthening the organization, delivering services to our member associations, and continuing our work to make football truly global. Through the FIFA President and his administration, our focus remains entirely on this mission—and we are more determined than ever to fulfill it.”
