Former World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu cautions Cristiano Ronaldo that his ego could lead to a disastrous exit from the Portuguese national team.

Bixente Lizarazu, the former French international and World Cup champion, has issued a stark warning to Cristiano Ronaldo regarding the potential conclusion of his tenure with the Portugal national team. The 1998 title holder argues that the "ego" which propelled Ronaldo to global stardom may now become his most significant adversary in the final stages of his career.
Citing reports from the Portuguese newspaper Record, Lizarazu assigned responsibility for the current crisis to the Portuguese Football Federation, head coach Jorge Jesus, and Ronaldo himself. He cautioned that allowing the dispute to persist in its current form would constitute a "grave error," particularly given the captain of Al-Nassr’s established status in the history of Portuguese football.
The former defender emphasized that terminating Ronaldo’s relationship with the national squad under these circumstances would be disastrous for the player's image. He stressed the necessity of reaching an agreement that preserves Ronaldo’s standing and grants him a farewell consistent with his exceptional service to Portugal.
Lizarazu addressed the inherent difficulties elite athletes face as they age, noting that Ronaldo’s primary challenge lies in accepting the natural decline of certain physical capabilities. This adjustment is complicated by Ronaldo’s career-long persona as a player who never stops and refuses to acknowledge limits.
According to the 1998 World Cup winner, the solution requires clear dialogue among Ronaldo, Jesus, and the federation to explicitly define the player’s role. Options include limited participation or rest during specific matches. Lizarazu warned that promising playing time only to leave Ronaldo on the bench would undermine trust between all parties involved.
The Frenchman linked the ongoing tension directly to Ronaldo’s competitive nature. He explained that while this "ego" was a key secret to his success—driving him to work exceptionally hard and break records—it risks becoming a detrimental factor if he fails to adapt to the demands of this late career phase.
In his closing remarks, Lizarazu delivered a harsh prediction: "This was your strength, but it is now your worst enemy; because you have reached the age you have, and you will end up in the elephant graveyard, I guarantee you."
