Luke Shaw has provided an extensive account of the activities and atmosphere inside Manchester United’s dressing room on matchdays, describing his routine from the early morning until after the game.

Pre-match preparation and atmosphere

In a detailed interview with club media, Shaw described waking up on matchday feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement, driven by his desire to win and passion for playing. He emphasized that this energy has motivated him throughout his 12 years at the club.

When asked about his pre-match meal, Shaw said it varies depending on the game time. For evening matches, he often chooses pasta with pesto and chicken. He noted that the team usually gathers in the dressing room around three and a half hours before kickoff, where the mood is relaxed and cheerful.

“We’re there quite early before kick-off. We’re normally there three-and-a-half hours before the actual game, so when we get there it’s more of a relaxed vibe. Everyone’s a bit more chilled and talking normally,” Shaw explained. He added that the focus intensifies after a brief meeting at Carrington and when the team boards the bus to the stadium.

Shaw described Old Trafford as a “safe haven” for the players, highlighting the energy provided by the 70,000 fans who support the team at home games. He called the support “the best in the world,” praising fans who arrive early to see the team off the bus as a “real special feeling” and an honor to be part of the club.

Regarding the moments upon arrival at the stadium, Shaw said the players enter the changing room, prepare their gear, and attend a short meeting with the manager to cover final details before heading out for warm-ups. His personal warm-up routine includes a massage, foam rolling, stretching, and sometimes additional physio-assisted stretches.

He also mentioned that he usually sits next to teammates Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Maguire in the dressing room.

Matchday rituals and post-match recovery

Shaw revealed that a bell signals the squad to start warm-ups, after which he applies Deep Heat spray to activate his muscles. He participates in a team huddle that includes all players, staff, and personnel involved, emphasizing the collective goal of winning.

Describing the experience of walking out to a packed Old Trafford, Shaw called it “such a special feeling” that reminds him how fortunate he is to play for the club. He acknowledged the global scale of the club’s following and expressed gratitude for the privilege of wearing the Manchester United shirt.

He reiterated the importance of fan support both at home and away, noting that the atmosphere, especially during rivalry matches against teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, is intense and memorable. Shaw singled out the home victory against Manchester City earlier in the season as one of the best atmospheres he has experienced at Old Trafford.

Shaw stated that although his family and friends often attend matches, he rarely interacts with them before games to maintain focus, only acknowledging them after full-time.

Regarding post-match routines, Shaw said he usually receives a recovery massage and sometimes uses ice baths before heading home. He noted that his evenings have changed significantly compared to earlier in his career due to family commitments, spending time with his four children after matches.

He also mentioned that if United play on a Saturday, he watches Match of the Day to review his team’s performance and see other games.
