Maddison ends 'dark days' with dream goal in Spurs return
James Maddison scored within 15 minutes of his Tottenham comeback, describing the moment as a dream after a difficult ACL recovery.

A goal scored less than 15 minutes into his first match back marked the end of “dark days” for James Maddison. The midfielder described his return to Tottenham action as a dream come true following a lengthy rehabilitation period.
The Comeback Moment
Maddison stepped onto the pitch on Monday night when Coventry visited N17, ending a nightmare year-and-a-half spent recovering from an ACL rupture. His impact was immediate; he buried a curling effort from the edge of the box before the quarter-hour mark had passed.
This strike helped set Tottenham on their way to securing their first league win of the campaign. Maddison savored the celebration in front of the home fans, later admitting that he could not have imagined a better scenario for his comeback.
Reflections on Recovery
Asked by Sky Sports what he remembered of the goal, Maddison replied, "They're just a bit blurry... They're the ones you dream of." He reflected on the difficulty of the previous season, noting that such moments provide the light at the end of the tunnel during recovery.
"Recovering from the ACL last year, those dark days, they're the ones you dream of, those goals," he said. The Englishman was not alone in returning from injury, as Dejan Kulusevski also made a long-awaited comeback from a devastating knee problem.
Shared Experience and Future Hopes
Maddison expressed pride in sharing the moment with Kulusevski, stating, "I felt proud for him because I knew exactly how he felt. Those moments and those goals they make it all worth it." While Tottenham had endured a frustrating start to the season with promising performances failing to yield results, the side appeared much improved with Maddison’s influence.
The former England star admitted he was thrilled to see his name back on the team sheet. "Yeah I hoped [to start]. I spoke to the gaffer about this week and feeling like the right moment for me to go back into the starting 11 after a stop-start start to the season," Maddison explained.
He emphasized his desire to demonstrate his quality and show what the team had missed over the last 18 months since his previous start. "The gaffer asked me to play and said he wanted to enjoy watching me from the side so hopefully I did that. And getting the goal is always nice," he added.
