Gerrard: Tottenham’s 20-goal striker gap threatens top-four hopes

Former England midfielder Steven Gerrard has identified Tottenham Hotspur’s absence of a 20-goal-per-season striker as the club’s most serious transfer-market shortcoming. Speaking to TNT Sports following Spurs’ 3–2 home defeat by Aston Villa on Saturday, he said: “I think Tottenham have improved in some areas, but the big problem lies in the attacking side, specifically the lack of goals. They don't have a clinical striker, they don't have a goalscorer.”

Midfield strength contrasts with defensive vulnerability

Gerrard acknowledged upgrades in Tottenham’s midfield, citing the additions of Tonali, Fernandes, and Bentancur as having delivered “a strong midfield.” He noted Conor Gallagher “perhaps deserved to start today,” underscoring depth in that area. In contrast, he described the backline as “weak and a little fragile,” adding: “Tottenham are weak and a little fragile at the back, and they concede too many goals.” He pinpointed vulnerability to long balls as a critical flaw: “If your two centre-backs are unable to deal with long balls, then you will face problems.”

Recruitment accountability demanded

The former Liverpool captain placed direct responsibility on decision-makers: “The recruitment officials and those who made the decisions to sign this type of player have to look at each other and say: we didn't go out to sign a player who scores 20 goals a season.” He stressed that without such a finisher—and while conceding goals—the club’s position becomes precarious: “If you don't have that player, and you are conceding goals, then it may be time to worry again if you are a Tottenham fan.”

Two paths to safety in the table

Gerrard framed Tottenham’s challenge in binary terms: “There are two things: either you keep clean sheets, and that keeps you in a safe position in the table, or you have exceptional goalscorers in your team, as Harry Kane did for many years.” He emphasized the statistical weight of elite scoring: “Those players score the number of goals that keeps you at the top of the table.” Without either defensive solidity or a proven 20-goal threat, he warned, the club must proceed with caution.

He reiterated his respect for Tottenham’s attacking personnel: “I say that with all respect, because they have good players up front, exciting players. But who is going to score you 20 goals?”
