Manchester United remains focused on securing a high-profile midfielder, with ongoing hopes of completing a substantial transfer for one of their primary targets, according to The Athletic.

Key Midfield Target: Aurelien Tchouameni

Following unsuccessful attempts to sign Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, who joined Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, Manchester United is reassessing its options. Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, aged 26, is regarded internally as a "dream signing" for Old Trafford, despite the recognition that acquiring him would be both challenging and expensive.

The Athletic reports that United is prepared to act if Real Madrid opts to sell Tchouameni, as the Spanish club seeks to increase its budget through player sales. Real Madrid is simultaneously exploring midfield reinforcements, including Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Manchester City’s Rodri, though these transfers appear unlikely at this stage.

Should Tchouameni leave Santiago Bernabeu, he reportedly desires to join Manchester United and would be receptive to a move to the club, according to Athletic reporter Andy Mitten. The player has two years remaining on his current contract, and his salary demands may complicate negotiations.

Additional Midfield Prospects Under Consideration

Manchester United is also competing for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, a 22-year-old midfielder from Guernsey who impressed last season and attracted interest from top English clubs, including Arsenal. However, Bournemouth is determined to retain Scott this summer, aiming to secure him with a new contract likely to include a release clause. His existing contract runs until 2028.

The Athletic reveals that United is "weighing up a move" for the England under-21 international, who has significant admirers at Old Trafford and across the Premier League. It is believed that a fee of at least £80 million would be necessary to initiate negotiations with Bournemouth.

Another name on United’s radar is Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, a 25-year-old Germany international well known to United’s sporting director Jason Wilcox and recruitment director Christopher Vivell. However, sources close to Dortmund value Nmecha at approximately €120 million (£103 million), making a transfer unlikely at present. United is not currently progressing a deal for him.

Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, a versatile Brazilian midfielder capable of playing as a No.6 or No.8, has also emerged as a target. Chelsea is reportedly open to selling Santos for around £50 million, and United has engaged in discussions with his representatives.

Other less prominent options include Fulham’s Sander Berge, who is performing well at the World Cup with Norway, and Tyler Adams, Scott’s teammate at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.

Outlook on Manchester United’s Midfield Strategy

After losing two promising young midfielders to rival clubs, Manchester United’s public confidence may contrast with internal pressures. Securing a marquee signing like Tchouameni would provide Michael Carrick with a world-class midfielder to serve as the team’s foundation. The arrival of the French midfielder could overshadow the absence of Anderson or Fernandes in the squad this summer.
