Messi to collect Asturias Award in Oviedo before Red Bulls clash
Inter Miami coach Kily Gonzalez confirms Lionel Messi will travel to Spain for the Princess of Asturias Award, returning two days later for an MLS match.

Inter Miami head coach Kily Gonzalez has confirmed that Lionel Messi is scheduled to travel to Spain next week. The Argentine forward will attend the ceremony in Oviedo on 22 October to receive the prestigious 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
Gonzalez confirms travel plans
Messi is set to rejoin his squad two days after the award event. This return aligns with Inter Miami’s upcoming Major League Soccer fixture against the New York Red Bulls in Harrison, New Jersey. Despite the tight schedule and transatlantic journey, Gonzalez stated he has no concerns regarding his captain's availability for the match.
The club fully supports Messi taking time out of the season for this occasion. Gonzalez emphasized that the entire organization encouraged Messi to accept the honor in person. He noted that the award holds immense significance not just for the player, but also for his family.
Coach backs star's participation
"Yes, he does have this event, and I love that he will assume it in this way," Gonzalez said, as quoted by ESPN. "The whole club agrees that he should be there because it is a terribly important award, not just for him but for his family."
Gonzalez further explained his approach to integrating Messi back into the team immediately upon return. "Then, of course, I will count on him for the game. Leo has the possibility, not an advantage, and I said it the other day after the match, I want him to be good. He needs this. He'll be there, then I will have him at the game so I'm not worried about that at all."
Historic recognition details
The Princess of Asturias Award recognizes notable achievements across various fields, including literature, international cooperation, and sports. The Argentine icon was selected by the judging panel and foundation President Teresa Perales when the announcement was made in June.
This selection marks a historic moment, as Messi becomes the very first individual football player to ever receive the honour. The award acknowledges both his extraordinary athletic talent and his broader contribution off the pitch.
"The truth is that for me it is a great pride to be able to receive this recognition because of the importance it has and for the fact that it is recognized not just for what I do on the pitch but for what I do off the pitch," Messi said when his victory was announced.
Current team standings
Before departing for Spain, Messi and Inter Miami face immediate league duties. The team currently sits second in the MLS standings as the regular season nears its conclusion. They recently secured their spot in the 2026 MLS playoffs following a victory.
Messi leads the league's Golden Boot race with 23 goals, holding a four-goal advantage over FC Dallas striker Petar Musa. The Herons are scheduled to play Atlanta United on Saturday, continuing their momentum ahead of the playoff push.
